The 1GD-FTV is Toyota's 2.8-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder, fitted to the HiLux (2015–on), LandCruiser Prado 150 Series (2015–on), Fortuner, and HiAce (2019–on). It's a capable, modern engine — but like all high-compression diesel heads, it's not immune to failure. When it does go, the symptoms can escalate quickly.

Common Symptoms of 1GD-FTV Cylinder Head Failure

Cylinder head failure on the 1GD-FTV typically presents as one or more of the following:

  • White smoke from the exhaust — coolant entering the combustion chamber is the most common sign of a blown head gasket or cracked head.
  • Coolant loss with no visible leak — if you're topping up the overflow tank regularly but can't find a leak, it's likely being burned internally.
  • Overheating — a warped or cracked head disrupts coolant flow, causing the engine to run hot. If the temperature gauge climbs, stop driving immediately.
  • Milky oil — coolant mixing with engine oil produces a creamy, light-brown residue on the dipstick or under the oil cap. This is serious and requires immediate attention.
  • Loss of power or rough idle — a compression leak across a failed head gasket reduces cylinder pressure, causing misfires and sluggish performance.
  • Bubbling in the coolant reservoir — combustion gases entering the cooling system cause visible bubbling, especially when the engine is warm.

If you're seeing two or more of these symptoms together, the cylinder head is the most likely cause.

What Causes 1GD-FTV Cylinder Head Problems?

The 1GD-FTV runs high compression and high combustion temperatures. The most common causes of head failure are:

  • Overheating — a single overheating event can warp the aluminium head. Even a brief overheat that doesn't result in a breakdown can cause microscopic distortion that leads to gasket failure later.
  • Coolant neglect — old or degraded coolant loses its corrosion inhibitors, leading to internal corrosion and pitting on the head surface.
  • Head bolt fatigue — the 1GD uses torque-to-yield (TTY) stretch bolts that are single-use. Reusing them is a common cause of gasket failure after a repair.
  • Cracking between valve seats — thermal cycling over high kilometres can cause hairline cracks to develop, particularly between the exhaust valve seats.

Reconditioned vs Assembled — What's the Difference?

When your 1GD-FTV head fails, you have two main paths:

  • Reconditioned (machined) head — your existing head is removed, sent to a machine shop, pressure-tested, resurfaced, and rebuilt with new valve seats and guides. This takes time and depends on the condition of your core — a cracked head can't be reconditioned.
  • Assembled replacement head — a new or remanufactured head, fully assembled and ready to bolt on. No core exchange required, no waiting on machining. This is the fastest path back on the road.

For most HiLux and Prado owners, an assembled replacement head is the more practical option — especially when the vehicle is needed for work.

1GD-FTV Replacement Parts — What You'll Need

Whether you're doing the job yourself or handing it to a mechanic, a complete 1GD-FTV cylinder head replacement typically requires:

  • Assembled cylinder head (or bare casting if machining your own)
  • VRS head gasket set with new TTY head bolts
  • Timing chain kit (recommended if high kilometres)
  • Water pump (replace while the front of the engine is accessible)
  • Rocker cover gasket

Replacing the water pump and timing chain at the same time as the head is strongly recommended — the labour overlap makes it cost-effective, and these components are often due at the same mileage interval.
